What Am i Doing Wrong?
« on: September 10, 2014, 11:52:09 AM »
I'm new here, so if this has already been posted, I apologize.

So I was initially to take the LSAT in June of 2014 and started studying on my own in March.  After 2 months or so, I was not scoring higher than a 146 and at that point, withdrew from the LSAT and was going to take it in September.  In June, I decided to sign up for an LSAT course, however two days before the class began I received a call from Testmasters (the prep course I chose) telling me that the class could not find a qualified enough teacher and I had a few choices. Either to get a full refund, take the class in Boston (I'm in Rhode Island) so drive up to Boston four days a week, or take the online course.  I chose the online course and the day after began studying rigorously again.  However, after months more of studying, I can score no higher than a 153.  I've been getting so depressed and angry and, while initially I was aiming to score a 160, I almost feel like I should just go in September, hopefully get at least a 153 and just go to a lower tier law school.
I find it to be significantly embarrassing because all the people I talk and to and all the posts I see on forums of people discussing their score after taking the class is how stellar their score is, while my class simply allowed me to get up to average.

Have you ever had to take a critical thinking or informal logic course?  I'm wondering if you simply don't get the architecture of argument.  (This is for the LR section.)  You need to figure out 'The speaker is concluding/saying XXX on the basis of YYY.'  Then ask yourself if YYY follows from XXX.  Most often, your answer will be 'Yes, if ZZZ.'  Get to that point and you're ready for almost any type of LR question!

See with weaken and strengthen I get that and I actually kind of enjoy those questions, but all the other types just get me totally lost and I have a hard time seeing the relationship of the variables in play.  Additionally with RC i honestly am totally lost. I used to actually have no problem with them, now I read a passage and don't remember any of the information I read.

I just noticed I reversed things - but hopefully you saw that.  I should have said "You need to figure out 'The speaker is concluding/saying XXX on the basis of YYY.'  Then ask yourself if XXX follows from YYY.  Most often, your answer will be 'Yes, if ZZZ.' "

Well conclusion questions - the answer you're looking for is XXX.

Role of YYY questions, the answer you're looking for is 'a premise offered in support of XXX'.

Assumption required for the argument, the answer you'd look for is whatever you came up for ZZZ.

Str and wkn questions, remember they can address either YYY or ZZZ - since they're both premises needed for the conclusion.

As for your RC difficulties, try paraphrasing in your own words as you go AND having an ongoing dialogue with the author as you read ('this is an interesting point, I hadn't thought of that' or 'This is stupid, I don't believe it...' doesn't matter much what you say, just that you say something to the author as you read); that'll put the stuff into your short-term memory long enough for you to answer the questions.

I didn't notice but I got the general gist. And thank you I'll have to try that method! Hopefully whatever it is I'm doing wrong now that I wasnt before in RC comes back to me in the next 2 weeks!

As others say
