Saw this pop up on my Twitter feed this morning. It was fairly depressing...which of course made me think I should share it. Smiley

Still looking: University of Maryland School of Law Class of 2010 hits the job market
http://ht.ly/1SvPn

A few choice excerpts:

Quote
This year’s law grads are facing one of the strangest job markets in recent memory, according to law school career development professionals and the graduates themselves. It’s an environment where there can be hundreds of applicants for a single job, even for a lower-level judicial clerkship.

Quote
Like so may law students, Stubbs thought when she started law school that she would end up at a law firm. She adjusted her expectations after discovering a passion for health care law — and after not receiving an offer from the midsized firm where she worked as a law clerk last summer. In another economy, she said, she thinks she would have landed the job.
“I was blown away by how volatile the market is right now,” she said.

Quote
While the overall percentage of 2009 law graduates who were employed nine months after graduation was a strong 93.4 percent (see related story), Astrid Schmidt, director of law career development at the University of Baltimore, said she does not expect the same for this year’s class.

Looks like the legal market's recession is here for a few more years yet.

I definitely think we'll see the legal job market turn around significantly in the next 3-5 years. However, I also think that it will undergo a pretty huge transformation in the process, insofar as how associates are trained, who is given what work, what kinds of attorneys are in most demand, and how the infamous billable hour is handled. It'll be interesting to watch it develop, that's for sure!
